With “THIS IS A BANK" artist Kevin Abosch engages with the mechanics of storing and transferring value by presenting a series of works that confront the traditional notion of what a bank is by positing a decentralized network of less-understood and abstract value systems. Here, Abosch explores commodifiable value in everyday objects as well as human beings while staging public interventions in many of the World's banking centers. By making the private key to a blockchain wallet public and declaring it a “bank” open to anyone with the technological means to access it, the artist creates a complication that speaks to issues around public engagement in trust-systems. As technology presents a threat to traditional power-structures, Abosch considers the need to mitigate the human threat of corruption against our value-system.
